ESD
ANSI/ESD S 20.20 is standard that spells out the administrative and technical requirements necessary to design, establish, implement, and maintain an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Control Program for activities that : manufacture, process, assemble, install, package, label, service, test, inspector otherwise handle electrical, electronic parts, assemblies and equipment susceptible to damage by ESD greater than or equal to 100 volts Human Body Model (HBM). The standard also does not apply to electrically initiated explosive devices, flammable liquids and powders.

ANSI/ESD S 20.20 is standard developed by the ESD association and approved by ANSI. The ESD Association is a professional voluntary association dedicated to advancing the theory and practice of electrostatic discharge (ESD) avoidance. It was founded in 1982 in the United States and has a strong international flavour with members from more than 30 countries throughout the world. The association is chartered to expand ESD awareness through standards development, educational programs, local chapters, publications, tutorials, certification, and symposia.

ESD Association Standards can be purchased from the Association headquarter at 7900 Turin Road, Bldg 3, Suite 2, Rome, New York NY 13440-2069. Tel: 315-339-6937. For more information on ESD, please visit the ESD association's website at www.esda.org.

PSB Certification Pte Ltd successfully completed the ANSI/ESD S 20.20 witness assessment at Amkor Technology Singapore Pte Ltd on 24 Mar 2005 and has been approved by the ESD Association as an S20.20 certified registrar.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR ANSI/ESD S20.20

1) WHAT IS ESD ?

ESD stands for Electrostatic Discharge. It is a transfer of electrostatic charges between bodies at different electrostatic potentials caused by direct contact or induced by an electrostatic field.

2) WHAT IS THE ESD ASSOCIATION ?

It is a professional voluntary association dedicated to advancing the theory and practice of electrostatic discharge (ESD) avoidance. It was founded in 1982. Although, it is founded and headquartered in the United States, the ESD association has a strong international flavour with members from more than 30 countries throughout the world. The association is chartered to expand ESD awareness through standards development, educational programs, local chapters, publications, tutorials, certification, and symposia.

3) WHAT IS THE ANSI/ESD S20.20 STANDARD ?

It is a standard developed by the ESD association. It covers the requirements necessary to design, establish, implement, and maintain an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Control Program for activities that : manufacture, process, assemble, install, package, label, service, test, inspector otherwise handle electrical, electronic parts, assemblies and equipment susceptible to damage by ESD greater than or equal to 100 volts Human Body Model (HBM).

For devices susceptible to less than 100 volts HBM, more stringent ESD Control Program Technical Requirements may be required, including adjustment of program Technical Element Recommended Ranges.

The standard also does not apply to electrically initiated explosive devices, flammable liquids and powders.

4) WHERE DO I OBTAIN COPIES OF THE ESD ASSOCIATION STANDARDS ?

ESD Association Standards can be purchased from Association headquarters, 7900 Turin Road, Bldg 3, Suite 2, Rome, New York NY 13440-2069. Tel: 315-339-6937 or www.esda.org.

5) HOW DO I FIND THE ESD SENSITIVITY INFORMATION FOR SPECIFIC ESDS COMPONENTS ?

The first source would be the manufacturer or supplier of the component. An additional source is IIT Research Institute/ Reliability Analysis Centre in Rome, NY. The organisation issues a publication VZAP-95, Electrostatic Discharge Susceptibility Data for 22,000 devices.

6) IF MY COMPANY IS NOT CERTIFIED TO ISO 9001:2000, CAN I GO FOR ANSI/ESD S20.20 CERTIFICATION ?

Yes. Certification man-days would be more than a company which is ISO 9001:2000 certified. The additional man-days are to cover ISO 9001:2000 clauses like Quality System, Document and Data Control, Control of inspection, measuring and test equipment, Control of non-conforming product; Corrective and preventive action.

7) IF MY COMPANY HAS SUB-CONTRACTORS WHO HANDLE MY ESDS ITEMS/DEVICES, WOULD THEY BE INVOLVED IN THE CERTIFICATION ASSESSMENT ?

YES. As long as your subcontractors handle your ESDS items and these items eventually are delivered to your customers, PSB Certification assessors would need to audit the sites of your subcontractors to verify that their ESD controls are adequate.

8) WHAT IS THE CERTIFICATION PACKAGE FOR ANSI/ESD S20.20 ?

The one-time certification package comprises of the following :

(i) Manual assessment
(ii) Preliminary assessment (OPTIONAL)
(iii) Certification assessment

9) WHAT IS THE TYPICAL COST OF ANSI/ESD S20.20 CERTIFICATION ?

The cost of certification varies, depending on a number of factors such as the size of the company and the number of sub-contractors who handle your ESDS devices/items. Please submit the registration form and we will give you a quotation.

10) WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING PSB CERTIFICATION FOR ANSI/ESD S20.20 CERTIFICATION ?

We have a team of competent and professional assessors capable of performing integrated quality management system audits eg. TS 16949, TL 9000 and ISO 14000 together with the ANSI/ESD S20.20 assessments.
